Community Diagnostic Clinics
Spirometry and FeNo Testing
A community clinic to diagnose lung conditions such as COPD or asthma
What is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a basic lung function test to help diagnose lung conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Before the test, you will have your height and weight measured. The test is broken into two sections, relaxed breaths and forced breaths.
Relaxed breaths:
You will be asked to take in a deep breath and then blow into the machine until your lungs are empty. You will be asked to wear either nose clips or to hold your nose. You will be asked to do this several times.
Forced breaths:
After a break, you will be asked to take in a deep breath and blow forcefully into the machine until your lungs are empty. You will be asked to do this several times until the clinician is able to proceed.
What is FeNo?
Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNo) is a test to measure the levels of nitric oxide in your breath. A high level of nitric oxide could mean you have asthma. To do the test, you will need to take in a big, deep breath and then gently breathe out through the filtered mouthpiece into a portable device for approximately 10 seconds.
How to book an appointment
If you are registered at a GP practice in the East Riding of Yorkshire or Hull, you can attend this clinic. Ask your GP practice to book the appointment for you.
What to expect from your appointment
Prior to your appointment, you will be provided with information leaflets regarding how to prepare for your appointment. Both a Spirometry and FeNo test will be carried out during your appointment. The results of the testing will be communicated back to your registered GP practice.
All clinics are held at the East Riding Community Hospital on Swinemoor Lane in Beverley.
